Emerald Bay Hikes

Greetings from beautiful Lake Tahoe!

One of the best things about traveling to cool places is that people want to come visit you. After a month on the road, I have my first visitor. My friend Kris flew in from Madison, Wisconsin. I’ve been in Lake Tahoe all of 1 day. I picked her up in Reno and now she’s hanging out with me for a few days! So now we’re both discovering Lake Tahoe together. How cool is that?

I promised her I wouldn’t push her too hard while she’s here, which is good because I could probably dial it back a notch myself. We start with some Emerald Bay hikes.

Vikingsholm Trail

This trail, named after the hidden castle at the end of the trail, winds down from Emerald Bay State Park all the way to the lake.

In 1928 a woman by the name of Lora Josephine Knight purchased the land at the head of Emerald Bay. Apparently she had an affinity for Scandinavian architecture and built this incredible summer home to compliment the magnificent natural surroundings. It’s very impressive!

Lower Eagle Falls Trail

This trail picks up at Vikingsholm. It’s a very short .2 mile trail but with some cool views.

Rubicon Trail

We came back to Emerald Bay another day to do this trail. This 11.9 mile trail wraps all the way around Emerald Bay and then continues along the lake ending at D.L. Bliss State Park. We chose to tackle maybe only 5 or 6 miles of this trail. Since we had already seen a fair amount of Emerald Bay we decided to start this hike from D.L. Bliss State Park and hike back towards Emerald Bay.

What a great way to start off my Lake Tahoe stay! Hanging out with a friend, and exploring with some beautiful Emerald Bay hikes. I can’t wait to see what’s next!
