Oregon Coast

A new week brings a new location. I spent this week at my Aunt’s house in Astoria, Oregon. It was another pretty relaxing week, yet it was far from boring. Not only did I get to spend time with my Aunt and cousin, but I was also able to explore the beautiful Oregon coast.

It also doesn’t hurt when you’re staying in a beautiful place with incredible views.

View from my Aunt’s house. Not too bad!

Astoria Column

Just a couple hundred yards up from my Aunt’s house is the Astoria Column. Built in 1926 by the Great Northern Railway, it sits at 125 feet tall overlooking the mouth of the Columbia River. I must admit that climbing Coxcomb Hill and then ascending the 164 step spiral staircase to the top left me a little light headed.

Columbia River Maritime Musem

The Columbia River Maritime Museum is recognized as one of the best maritime museums in the United States. It’s definitely worth checking out if you’re ever in Astoria.

Fort Stevens State Park

Fort Stevens was an American military installation that guarded the mouth of the Columbia River. It is famous for being the only military installation in the continental United States to come under enemy fire in World War II. On the night of June 21 1942, the Japanese submarine I-25 surfaced off Fort Stevens and fired 17 shells.

Another great week is in the books. I want to thank my Aunt Liz for allowing me to stay at her house and her generous hospitality. Also I want to thank my cousin Gretchen for showing me around. I enjoyed my time in Astoria. It was a lot of fun.

Alas, it’s time once again for me to leave. The road is calling.

    1. I’ve done a poor job documenting some of the amazing food I’ve eaten on my travels. I will try to do better. In this instance I ate it to fast to take a picture of it! I ordered The Classic – homemade coleslaw, mayo and homemade peach BBQ sauce on a crunchy brioche bun. It was delish but I still miss our trips to RollMKE and Purple Door!
