Tubing The Deschutes

If you live in Bend and it’s above 80 degrees – you must float the river. I think that’s actually written somewhere into the laws. Tubing The Deschutes – it’s a phenomenon. The river becomes a destination for sun worshipers, party goers, stand up paddle boards, kayakers, and dogs.

Unless the weather is really hot, the frigid waters are almost unmanageable. You don’t see many people wanting to actually go in the water. Even on hot days people generally want to stay on top of the water. I even saw a dog refuse to go in the river!

It’s 83 degrees today. After a strenuous hot hike yesterday, this is a nice change of pace.

Floating from the start to end takeout point takes roughly 90 minutes. Once you get out of the river, you can either walk or grab a shuttle back to the starting point. Rinse and repeat. Feels like summertime to me.
